Shell Fall Victim To Elaborate Social Media Hoax
Shell’s upcoming campaign of arctic oil drilling is coming under increasing pressure as their proposed plans are receiving more and more attention by the mainstream media. Last month, a hoax video of a ‘Shell launch party’ was released on YouTube, with the intention of portraying Shell as reckless, incompetent and soulless corporation. This month, an even more elaborate trick has been played on shell by anti-drilling social media activists. By creating an extremely realistic website in the style of Shell’s actual website, and giving visitors the opportunity to create banners and share on social media sites, visitors have been duped into thinking that this is a genuine Shell-created campaign that has gone incredibly wrong. The website, which is likely not going to be around for long, can be found at http://arcticready.com/social.
