Wikipedia Going Offline to Protest SOPA
Online encyclopedia Wikipedia has announced that it will go offline for 24 hours on Wednesday 18th of January in order to protest against the proposed Stop Online Piracy Act. The bill “expands the ability of U.S. law enforcement and copyright holders to fight online trafficking in copyrighted intellectual property and counterfeit goods”. Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales has been very vocal in his opposition to the bill, and has encouraged followers to oppose the bill also. So, on Wednesday, when you log on to Wikipedia.org you will be met by a screen explaining the company’s stance on the bill and information on how to take action against SOPA.
